Rooted in Health Coffee Talk: Your Light

We all have those people in our lives who seem to make things a bit brighter when they walk in. Their presence might have a calming effect on you, They may put you at ease, make you laugh. They always seem to give that extra effort for those around them. There light is strong and you can’t help but want to be around it.

Today we challenge you to think about your own light. What are you giving to those around you? Sometimes we tend to be hard on ourselves, to feel that we are not enough, or are not doing enough. We may not realize the effect we are having on others just by being there for them, for being present. So as we look around at others, watching their lights shine brightly, take a step back and view yourself as others do. What can we do to share our light and love with others?

Nothing can dim the light that shines from within

Rooted in Health Coffee Talk: Avoidance

All too often, we follow up with a patient only to find out they have had a recurrence of their pain or injury. And many times they let us know sheepishly that they stopped doing their exercise program once things felt better. It was easier at the time to avoid the source of the problem, then to face it head on and work to change it.

This also happens with our emotional well being. Sometimes, throwing ourselves into other activities, avoiding the source of our distress can feel like an easy short term “fix”. Ultimately though, this distress will build and left unaddressed, begin to effect other aspects of our lives. We may feel tired, or hopeless. Irritated by things that were once a source of joy.

Avoidance can be very sneaky. We can use seemingly positive, healthy tactics to avoid the problem. For example, we may choose to focus on good eating, exercise. The problem is, while these are great habits to put us in the right mindset to tackle our issues, they aren’t necessarily the solution.

So be sure to face any issues you might have, any angst you may be feeling head on. Say it aloud to a trusted friend. Write it down if you are not ready to share with others. Avoidance might feel good in the short term but will never lead to resolution of the problem.

Avoidance is a great strategy to find comfort. It’s also a great long term strategy to guarantee misery

Rooted in Health Coffee Talk: Embracing the Mess

We have all had it happen. We are scrolling through social media, looking at pictures of tropical beaches or perfectly matched, smiling kids. We can’t help but compare and wonder why our lives don’t seem quite so “picture perfect”.

Of course we all know, that these “Christmas Card” moments aren’t the real deal. It is important to be aware that we are only seeing the carefully chosen “best” moments. Even more powerful is the realization that we don’t need to strive for these picture perfect moment to have a “moment”.

Those moments, the ones that turn into long lasting memories. They can catch you by surprise. Sometimes in the middle of the chaos, the “mess” that may be your life right now you have an unexpected “moment”, the kind that fills your heart with love and gratitude. Reminds you what life is really all about.

So stop worrying about creating that Christmas Card moment. Be open to every day, ordinary yet magical, moments in your own “perfectly” messy life!

Joy comes to us in ordinary moments. We risk missing out when we get too busy chasing down the extraordinary.

Rooted In Health Coffee Talk: You Have a Choice!

Today we are talking about Viktor Frankl moments. Victor Frankl is a holocaust survivor who even in his darkest moments recognized that the one thing that could not be taken from him was his will and his choice.

So we are challenging you to make the choice to be joyful, to choose gratitude and to choose to better your health regardless of what your current challenges may be. And beyond that, extend a hand out to those who are struggling to take that first step. During this month of sharing and love, invite others into our community whether it be through group classes, membership or simply following our blog and posts! Together we become stronger!!

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms- to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.

Rooted in Health Coffee Talk: Don’t Forget to Laugh!

Ever notice how serious everything seems lately?

We have so many great resources available and so many opportunities to “work on ourselves”, great tools to be our “best selves”. And while this is so important and so valuable we can’t forget to have fun! Finding our joy, laughing out loud, acting like a child for awhile is not only good for the soul it is essential to living your best life.

So we challenge you today. Put aside that to do list. Put down that personal development book you have been studying. Don’t put them too far away because they will serve you well. Just take a break for a little bit. Stop taking yourself so seriously. Let that inner kid out and be HAPPY!

The most important thing is to enjoy your life- to be happy. Its all that matters.”
